Rider Chanalyst Model 162 Restoration
The model 162 is the original RCA manufactured model of the Chanalyst. It came out around 1939 and was advertised at $107.50. The 162 is easily distinguished from the later 162C by the fact that several of the test jacks, and the wattmeter receptacle are mounted on the rear panel. On the later versions all the jacks and the test receptacle were moved to the front. Plus there was an update or two on the later models such as a Standby position on the power switch to prolong the life of the eye tubes. Given the price of eye tubes now days I may add that update to this unit.
Inside it's very, very clean, better than I'd hoped. I don't usually come across equipment as clean as this one. A really pleasant surprise for once.
The only corrosion I see is on the line fuse and fuse holder. The corrosion must have weakened a clip on the fuse holder because one side of it fell off when I popped the fuse to clean it. |
Under the chassis is beautifully clean too. I see a few non-original parts here, about five resistors and the power cord. The original resistors are all older, non Allen Bradley style, and more than half of the ones I checked are way out of tolerance and will need replaced.
I see wax dripping out of a few of the paper capacitors, and just from their age alone I know they're all electrically leaky, even without testing, so they will get replaced along with the electrolytics.

It may be a while before I can complete a full restoration but I went ahead and cleaned the case and front panel before putting it on the shelf. It had a lot of dirt and yellow cigarette smoke residue on it.
The case finish looks very good, just a minor chip or two to touch up. After cleaning the front panel a coat of liquid auto wax was applied to protect its surface.

more to come...
