Heathkit IT-28 Capacitor Tester
This vintage piece of Heathkit test gear is one of my most used testers when restoring old radios. Although it can measure resistance, inductance and capacitance, it's really most useful to me for checking capacitor leakage.
The cabinet and paint are in nice shape too, and only needed cleaning.
Tho opposite side of the chassis has the two electrolytic filter capacitors, plus a couple of film caps. The film caps are OK, but not the two 40uF electrolytics.
While checking resistors I found one that was not soldered to its terminal. It was the 220KΩ resistor from B+ to pin 7 of the 6BN8. It's not unusual to find such errors in a kit-built piece of equipment. The three trimmer pots at the upper left of the chassis are the only calibration adjustments. The calibration steps are in the manual. |
About half of the resistors are still in spec, but I found 17 that were out of tolerance. Most of those were the divider resistors on the voltage selector switch, where all but one were replaced.
Not shown are a couple of other parts that were replaced. The 6E5 eye tube was very dim when I originally got the meter so I installed a new one. And the two filter caps were replaced. |
I consider the IT-28 to be an indispensable tester on my old radio workbench.
