Constructing The New Dome
I'm sorting out the base ring sections so I can bolt it all together and get accurate diameter measurements. The sections are upside down at the moment so I can more easily sort the wheel track sections to match the predrilled holes in the base ring. Not all the base pieces are interchangeable and I have to sort them to match, without the help of any documentation. I can mount individual track sections to individual base sections now, but before interconnecting the base sections I'll need to flip everything.

Finally a little progress. The base sections and wheel tracks are sorted and temporarily bolted together, and the base is now right side up. It measures 150" across or 12' 6" as was scribbled on one side with a marker. Now that that's confirmed I can start on a base ring for the dome rollers.
I estimate the base weighs in at around 400lbs. The panels are at least a couple hundred more and just the large shutter is probably another hundred. So once the dome is permanently bolted together it is going to need heavy equipment to move it, if I don't build it in place atop the dome building. I can also dig out my Lancaster silo dome manual and start studying how to assemble panels. |
