A Tail of Two Aussies
The newest members of our family. The two little guys are Australian Sheperds and were born right before Christmas 2021. We just brought them home at 7 weeks old and are they ever a handfull.
I've had a dog, mostly collies, almost my entire life, from as early as I can remember. So, needless to say, I think every little boy should have a dog. And every big kid, too.

On the left is Shadow. We chose him first out of the 4 pups that were available. It was really hard to choose as they were all beautiful.
On the right is Indy. When we went to see the pups the first time, Indy was the only one to run right to me. I kept thinking about him and when I talked to the breeder about a week or so later I asked if any puppies were still available. Indy was and we brought him home too. |
Some people might consider two puppies to be a bit too much to handle, and at times they can be, but actually these two have been great together so far. They play together and keep each other from being lonely. They still howl for us when they do get bored, but it's not as often as it might have been.

Best buddies. My wife said if we got them I would have to take care of them myself. But so far she's bathed and blow dried them, watered and fed them, cleaned up after them, and played with them almost as much as my grandson and I have. I think she's hooked. She even made the final decision on their names.

Happy Valentines Day. At 8 weeks old they are paper trained when in their space in the laundry room. They only had to be shown once or twice where to go. But we still keep a close eye on them when they are loose in the rest of the house.
They are also learning to sit on command. The immediate goal is to get them to sit and stay when putting their food out.

At about 10 weeks old we took them to the vet for a checkup. Indy is just over 13 lbs and Shadow is close behind at around 12-1/2 lbs. The doc says both are healthy.
They sure do eat good. Indy has the routine down pat, feet on the table and head buried in the bowl.
After eating, weather permitting, we go for a walk in the woods and field and let them hang out in a fenced area to soak up some sun. And our grandson has a sandpile to play in which the pups love digging and rolling around in.

At 12 weeks they've been to the vet twice for shots, deworming and the like. They're both around 16 lbs and have a healthy appetite.
They now know commands for sit, down and shake, and they know to go to their crate when bringing them food. Still working on stay: when Indy sees food he goes brain dead. And they are making progress walking on a leash and heeling.
Mostly they just want to play, wrestle and chew on stuff.

Lots more to come...
